Coloring the Cities
Local Futures: Coloring the Cities
Jeju's regional identity is imbued with various colors by its unique environment and culture
accumulated over a long time.
As we experience the climate crisis and a global pandemic, we have begun to question the
current trend of globalization, which seeks to connect the world as one territory The
globalization trend that initially began with economic efficiency has now made us realize the
need to build diversity socially and culturally.
Regional identity, based on the unique culture and environment of a region, is an excellent
way to foster diversity Such regional identity is rooted in the periphery rather than the
center and encapsulates values that can be respected for their distinctiveness rather than
universality.
Furthermore, the regional identity of architecture is influenced by both the natural and
human environments, and unique environmental factors evolve over time In other words,
regional identity is not a static entity that can be defined as a single object but exists within an ever changing organic flow.
In reflecting on the regional identity of Jeju's architecture, we can explore the direction in
which the colors of various cities around the world are flowing Additionally, we can discuss
what characterizes Jeju's architecture and how it should be integrated.
